Located at the southernmost end of New Zealand’s North Island, Wellington is the capital of New Zealand. It has eateries, museums, cultural attractions and more to offer. We visited here a while back and spent a fabulous few days exploring some of the sights. There are so much to see, so this is just a small list of highlights.

Petone Wharf

Ever seen a little patch of paradise? Well for me this was it. Such a beautiful seaside town and the wharf and beach were such a joy to photograph. Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea, but we loved it here and visited several times during our stay. I wish we had stayed here instead of Wellington City itself.

Weta Cave Studio

We left this to book til the last minute as a result we managed to secure tickets for the Weta Basic Studio tour in Miramar. There are other tours, but I suggest you book ahead of time. The tour was fascinating, with props, costumes and giant models to admire. Photos were not allowed for most of the tour due to copyright restrictions, but we were able to take some pictures with the phone at the end. It was such a joy and a highlight of our trip to Wellington

Mount Victoria

Right in the heart of Wellington, it’s a good spot for sunset. But beware it is often difficult to get to a car park and it is frequently VERY windy. They don’t call Wellington the Windy City for no reason!

Point Halswell Lighthouse

Sadly, it was gray, windy and quite wet when we visited, but we still had fun exploring this area. It’s a historic spot not too far from Wellington.

Museums, galleries and historic buildings

Of course, exhibits will change from time to time, but there is always something to see and do, especially if the weather is not playing nice. We managed to see the Chinese terracotta Warriors exhibit, which was fascinating. Check out Oriental Bay (a good spot for sunset), Old Parliament House, the old St Pauls Cathedral (see the beautiful stained glass windows) and more.

Sea to City Bridge

Wander the city, and check out the Saturday Markets buzzing with activity. Walk the Sea to City bridge and see various other sights along the waterfront. Stop for a bite to eat. We really enjoyed Gotham, a Batman-inspired cafe. Great food and a fun atmosphere.

Zealandia Eco Sanctuary

This wildlife eco sanctuary is right in the heart of Wellington, with over 40 rare wildlife species (if you can catch a glimpse), walking/jogging tracks, cafes and more. A lovely little spot to visit.

Cape Palliser

This was one of the biggest highlights of our trip to New Zealand, we still talk about it. I wrote an entire article on it, so you can check that out here.

Tips:

  • If you are heading somewhere new, a little bit of research on the area is a great idea. Even speaking to locals or someone who has visited the area before will help. A little bit of local knowledge can go a long way.
  • When going on long drives, make sure you have plenty of fuel, snacks and water. If possible let people know where you are heading.
  • If heading down the coast, be prepared for anything, from blue sky and sunshine to heavy sea mist; Take jackets, hats, sunscreen and rain ponchos — be prepared!
  • Check all camera gear is ready and packed the night before, including batteries, SD cards and lenses. Nothing worse than getting somewhere and finding you left the battery on the counter or the SD card in the reader!
  • What to take? I spent most of my visit with my 16-35mm wide angle on, but a zoom with a great range like 28-200 (or 300) mm lens would be ideal.
