I received an Xcellon CFexpress Type A and UHS-II SD Card Reader Card Reader for review. Typically, card readers are taken for granted by most users, but this model offers a few noteworthy features besides a long name.

Xcellon Card Reader — The Good

The first thing you’ll notice is the appealing aluminum enclosure. Besides looking beautiful, it has a purpose – to help dissipate heat. It easily fits in the palm of your hand (roughly 2 x .5 x3”). It weighs less than 3 ounces, but has a study, substantial feel for something so compact.

As you can probably guess from the name, this particular model accepts CFexpress Type A and UHS-II SD cards. USB Type-C and USB Type-A cables are included for simple plug and play connection, which is awesome! Using USB bus power, you’re ready to go instantly. The reader’s blue LED indicator light lets you know you’re ready for processing your card’s data. When you insert cards, they are securely held with a push-lock mechanism.

The speed of transfer was exceptional. I played HD video right from the card without a hint of lag, and I opened large photographs easily. I also transferred 4K video clips to my desktop and RAID quickly. This is thanks to the 10Gb/s USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connection. For real-world professional use, this card readers passes the test.

Xcellon Card Reader — The OK

Xcellon claims the reader has a nonslip rubber base. Upon removing the protective adhesive, there is certainly a rubber base… but it’s a stretch to say it is nonslip. It definitely limits some movement and the rubber prevents scratching on surfaces, but the reader can still slide along a desk somewhat easily.

The unit also generates heat when in use. It isn’t anywhere enough to burn you, but I still was surprised how warm the unit got after prolonged usage given its aluminum construction that promotes cooler operation. The good news is the unit cools off quickly after usage.
