Hello Nicele, I might have a question – what is your impression on Quick + refine mask? I noticed it even in one german video and also reported it on the beta group – I can get better mask by just using Perfect brush + locking the color sampling, but what I think is, that Quick + Refine mask does not have so high quality. Hopefully it is not about me using them in a wrong way. What is your impression when comparing both tools?
You may need to use the refine brush several times because it “learns as it it’s used.” Also you may have to turn on color contamination to get rid of some fringing. . Try switching back and forth to the black/white view of your selection and paint back in some of the gray areas. Of course you may wish to use the perfect brush with CMD or CTRL to paint in or out. masking will not always be a two- or three-step process and it may take you up to a half hour to get the mask to your liking.… Read more »
This is excellent, Nicole. Wish you would consider creating and marketing on your website and Amazon, B&H, etc. a comprehensive set of video lessons covering in one or two DVDs all features of Perfect Photo Suite 9. Something similar to Laura Shoe’s superb two-set video lessons on Lightroom. I’m a fan of your book and eBooks about Perfect Photo Suite and think such a product is a natural for you and would be very well received.
Nicole,
Your video on layer masking with onOne perfect suite 9 is among the best that I have seen, and I have seen many. Very helpful. Great job .
Be warned folks. As helpful as the new tools may be for very simple sky replacements, the quick mask/refinement does not appear to work even remotely acceptably on complex selections. Obviously on 1 are starting to aim their product at the consumer market rather than at professionals or they wouldn’t have removed their already working drop and add brushes. I purchased the suite very specifically for masking very complex sky replacements (through tree branches, etc.) and this technique utterly fails in such scenarios. I have done literally 20 brushes with the quick mast and refinement brushes around tree branches and… Read more »
“Be warned folks. As helpful as the new tools may be for very simple sky replacements, the quick mask/refinement does not appear to work even remotely acceptably on complex selections. ” In all of the tutorials I have seen, the quick mask tool was only used for large areas. The perfect mask brush with refinement and chisel was used for the more complex masking jobs such as trees. I replace skies with trees in the foreground frequently and I never use the quick mask tool. I always start with the perfect brush masking tool. I also brighten the highlights before… Read more »
