Tamron has unveiled the development of the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 (Model A065), an advanced telephoto zoom lens with a wide aperture designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. Anticipated to hit the market in the Fall of 2023, this lens represents the next stage of evolution from its highly acclaimed first-generation predecessor. It comes with several enhancements aimed at improving performance.

The standout enhancement in the new G2 lens is the integration of TAMRON’s exclusive VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism. This technology maintains the lens’s compact size and weight while enabling more stable shooting, setting a new benchmark for maneuverability among fast-aperture F2.8 telephoto zoom lenses designed for full-frame cameras. This achievement is as of July 2023 and pertains to lenses equipped with Vibration Compensation.

The optical design has undergone a complete overhaul compared to the initial 70-180mm F2.8 model, achieving uncompromised image quality across the entire zoom range. Notably, the Minimum Object Distance (MOD) has been reduced to 0.3m (11.8 inches) at the wide end, in contrast to the first-generation’s 0.85m (33.5 inches). This adjustment allows users to explore distinctive photographic expressions unique to this lens. Furthermore, the new 70-180mm F2.8 G2 zoom boasts TAMRON’s acclaimed VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism, enabling swift, accurate autofocus performance suitable for both still photography and video shooting.

Additionally, the new G2 zoom lens supports TAMRON’s proprietary software applications: TAMRON Lens Utility™ and TAMRON Lens Utility Mobile™. These in-house developed apps enable customization of functions based on various shooting styles for both still photography and videography. The lens’s design has been improved to enhance user experience and durability against scratches. This lens harmoniously combines exceptional maneuverability and practicality, carrying the distinction of the second-generation G2 label, and promises to provide enhanced shooting experiences for enthusiasts of fast-aperture telephoto zoom lenses.
