Fans of both Leica and Walt Disney have a new reason to get excited, as the two iconic companies recently collaborated to launch a special limited edition camera. Dubbed Leica Q2 | Disney “100 Years of Wonder,” the camera marks the anniversary of the film studio, which has been creating sophisticated cartoon storyboards using Leica cameras and projectors since the very early days of animation.

For over 100 years, Leica (then called Leitz) equipment were instrumental to Disney’s innovative approach to animated filmmaking. Its effect was influential and enduring that the term “Leica Reel” emerged during this period. These reels were made from animated stills that run on 35mm film projections. According to Leica, it involves an advanced process wherein combined techniques align preliminary artwork with a soundtrack. This allows for a very precise sense of the pace of a sequence.

The design applied to the special edition of the Leica Q2 camera dates back to a model sheet created in 1937 by one of Walt Disney Studio’s noted animators, Don Towsley. The material is reminiscent of the tracing paper on which Disney’s animators penciled the studio’s iconic characters and scenes. In addition, a Mickey Mouse print adorns the camera’s top plate. The special edition camera also includes a protective dust bag with matching original Disney graphics, and a special rope strap. All these details make it an interesting addition to any camera collection.
The special edition Leica Q2 | Disney “100 Years of Wonder” is limited to 500 sets worldwide. It will be available globally at Leica Stores, the Leica Online Store and authorized dealers by end of April 2023. The recommended retail price will be $5,995.
