Going on an epic adventure soon? Best be ready with the best gear for equally epic travel photography. If you haven’t decided yet on what lenses to pack, Jay P. Morgan of The Slanted Lens recommends what he considers as the perfect trinity of lenses for travel photography!
In the video above, he explains why the Tamron 150-500mm, Tamron 35-150mm and Tamron 17-28mm lenses let him pack as light as possible and do capture everything that he wants while traveling. He also covers some important technical details to note for this trinity of lenses.
For example, he found that the autofocus features and capabilities of the 150-500mm matches well with the Sony a1. As we can see in his sample snaps, this is great for when you have the chance to do some wildlife photography during your trip. Meanwhile, the 35-150mm is a versatile “walk-around” lens that allows for portraits, landscapes, and even some macro capabilities. Finally, for some sweeping landscapes and cityscapes, the lightweight 17-28mm is also a great choice for its fast autofocus, macro capability and versatile range.
On a side note, Tamron bagged two TIPA Awards this year for the 150-500mm and 35-150mm. The latter was in fact honored with “Best Travel Zoom Lens.” That’s one more reason to have it in your travel gear!

Good write-up. I use Canon 17-24, Tamron 24-70 f 2.8, Canon 100-400. Very close to what you recommend.
The 35-150 wasn’t released when I set up my Tamron Travel Trio – I’m using the Tamron 28-200 with both the 17-28 and 150-500 – still wishing there was a teleconverter for the 150-500 on this year’s African safari!
Tamron 11-20, Sigma 18-50, Sony 70-350 for aps-c. Very light trinity in real good quality.
The 12-40 f/2.8 and the 40-150 f/2.8. Those two are quite sufficient, covering a range in 35mm terms of 24mm to 300mm while taking up very little space and adding very little weight to your various baggage items.
Fujifilm 10-24 f/4, 16-80 f/4 and 70-300, and x1.4 if needed. A bit wider coverage, about as long, or longer with the teleconverter, and quite a bit lighter 1405g vs 3310g.
