If you’re considering the newly released Lumix S9 as a dedicated street photography camera, you must be curious about your other Lumix options. Will an older model be just as good? Today, we have Manchester, UK-based street photographer George Holden comparing the $1,500 S9 with the eight-year-old $500 Lumix GX80.
In the video above, Holden first presents a size comparison of the Lumix S9 and Lumix GX80. He also shares his own setup and lens of choice for street photography for both cameras. Of course, he also takes both cameras out for a photowalk to compare their shooting experience.
Holden also pointed out the biggest difference between the two cameras: The GX80 has a Micro Four Thirds sensor, while the S9 has a Full Frame sensor. The former, with its smaller lenses is obviously the more compact option, but of course, the S9 isn’t too far behind when it comes to size and handling.
Finally, Holden also shares his thoughts on one the most important factors for everyone’s consideration: not just the price, but also the value. Given that there aren’t as many lens options — and affordable ones at that — available for the S9 at the moment, you’ll likely be better off with a different full frame camera with plenty of lens options. Or in the case of this review, an older camera and lens combo that you can get for much less in the used market. But of course, that’s just one key consideration.
So, do you think Holden’s comparisons between the Lumix S9 and Lumix GX80 make sense? Which one would you pick between the two as a dedicated street photography camera and why? Share your insights in the comments below!

Panasonic refuses to continue the venerable GX9. OMD also will not continue the much loved pen F….so…the Sony a7c comes to the rescue….no matter how you look at it…the panasonic s9 is not a very useful tool for stills…Cheers
I have a GX8 and do not see the point of the S9….NO Viewfinder, you can’t see your phone screen in sunlight so how are you supposed to frame and adjust settings in a photo.
The GX80 and GX85 are competent cameras with so many advantages. The GX85 rounds out my MFT camera kit. And when paired with the excellent Lumix compact prime lenses it can’t be neat for street photography.
Image is everything. Peace and
I use an EM1ii as my main camera but the GX80 is my street and travel option. I prefer the combo of 17mm f2.8 pancake for its wider view and the 45mm f1.8 for more reach. But for travel, I use the X series 14-42 pancake and 45-175 zooms with a 9mm bodycap and 10mm extension tube and with those I can shoot most things.
