In the past I’ve cobbled together a way to do some of my work standing up. I used a posing table for working on my laptop and went back and forth between the two. To be able to have all of my monitors/kit raise and lower at the same time is magical.

The FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk has an electric motor that comfortably moves the table top from a standing position to seated. It makes working at various levels easy as pie. I’ll tell you upfront. I’m a fan.

Note: FlexiSpot sent the E7 Standing Desk to review. However, this is a completely independent review. All thoughts about this desk are our own.

Standing at the FlexSpot desk
Standing at the FlexiSpot desk with bamboo top. I’m still working out where different pieces of equipment will be. When that happens I’ll package up and neaten my wires.

Pros

  • Easy to assemble (note one difference below)
  • Motor is smooth and quiet when moving the unit
  • Good size for my two monitors and computer, keyboard tablet and peripherals

Cons

  • I have one little quibble in putting the unit together. The legs assembly can be difficult to align with the pre-drilled holes on the table top. This could be mitigated by having a template around the holes to help with adjusting the legs to the proper size and alignment.

FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk — Ergonomics and build quality

This unit is built strong and clean. The raise and lower motors come assembled in the legs and work as soon as the connections are attached and it is plugged in. Follow the directions in assembly and this unit is ready to go. The wires that come with the desk are easily hidden and covered with the cable tray that is built in to the unit.

FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk — Assembly

Note that the desk legs and table top will come in separate shipments. The base leg portion calls for two people to carry as it is long and weighs 76 pounds. The desk top is packed very well to insure that no corners can be damaged during shipping.

Directions were super easy to follow to put this bad-boy together!

I am usually hopeless in following directions for putting things such as this together. Just ask my wife! To her surprise I didn’t need to call her to point me in the right direction. The supplied Allen wrench was used for most attachments. The instructions were clear and concise. The Allen bolts were packed in separate plastic bag compartments marked A-F matching the printed guide. Major parts referred to were color coded blue to help you figure out which pieces went where at every step of the way. The only other tool beside the Allen wrench needed is a Phillips head screwdriver or drill with a Phillips bit. The screws are used to attach the base to the desktop.

flexispot control panel photo
FlexSpot control panel. Once you have sussed out where you want the desk to be while sitting, standing or somewhere in between you can save the settings with the buttons, 1-2-standing figure – sitting figure.
The controller gives you a read out in inches for the height of the desk when it is in motion.

A reminder note to not throw out your packing materials until after it is put together. The controller unit was in a box that looked like a spacer. I didn’t notice til I got to that point in the assembly that I hadn’t unpacked it.

FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk — In use

So far the unit has performed flawlessly. I put in a mat for standing support and comfort. As I work with it more I may add a keyboard tray to hold my drawing pen tablet as I had with my sit down desk. As it is, I have a 27 inch iMac, a 27 inch Eizo monitor, keyboard, pen tablet, 16 inch laptop, small computer speakers, stand for a web camera and small label printer. I’ll be tweaking everything just a bit as I work more with this unit. Then I package up the additional wires for a cleaner look.

Almost everything in place. Still working at where the wires will live.

The black legs and dark bamboo desktop finish work well in my space. I find it elegant and comfortable. There are lots of different options as well from the blond bamboo to chipboard and solid wood. Design your own on the website.

FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk — Why use a movable desk?

Let’s face it. We photographers sit too much and it can impact our health. Studies have shown that people who sit too much have an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease. Having a movable desk lowers your risk of gaining weight, helps reduce back pain, boosts productivity and can improve your mood as well.
