The beach beckons with its endless possibilities – the sun-kissed glow, the crashing waves, the vast expanse. No wonder it’s a popular location for portrait photography. But capturing truly creative beach portraits goes beyond just pointing your camera and snapping away. Here’s a look at some benefits and potential pitfalls of a beach shoot, along with tips to help you create captivating images.

Benefits of a creative beach shoot
- Natural light extravaganza: Beaches offer an abundance of beautiful natural light. The golden hour, just after sunrise or before sunset, bathes everything in a soft, flattering glow. You can also use the sun as a backlight for dramatic silhouettes or play with shadows for an interesting effect.
- Endless backdrops: The beach provides a vast canvas for creativity. From rolling waves to towering cliffs, weathered driftwood to vibrant seashells, the environment itself becomes an integral part of the portrait.
- Water works wonders: The ocean adds a sense of movement and dynamism. Play with reflections in the wet sand or capture a playful splash for a touch of energy.
Pitfalls to avoid
- Harsh sunlight: The midday sun casts harsh shadows and squints. Stick to sunrise or sunset for softer light, or use a diffuser to soften the light during peak hours. Ideally, a cloudy sky can add diffusion to the sun too. Plus, stormy skies can add a sense of drama.
- Sandcastles of chaos: Sand can be tricky! It can get in your equipment and irritate your subject’s eyes. Bring a compressed air can for quick cleaning and be mindful of wind direction. Saltwater spray can also be a concern, so choose weatherproof gear or be extra cautious.
- Glaring reflections: Be aware of bright reflections off the sand and water that can overpower your subject. Compose your shots carefully or use a polarizing filter to cut down the glare. Balancing out bright light with artificial light (like a flash) can also help. Don’t forget a reflector too.
- Crowds: Choose to shoot when the crowds are minimal, so avoid public holidays and weekends or during the middle of the day.

Tips for a successful beach shoot
- Plan the outfit. Choose colors that complement the beach environment – light, breezy fabrics work well. Consider textures and movement for added visual interest. I found this fabulous dress at a thrift store, I repurposed a Elvin headpiece and some jewellery. I also grabbed a scrap piece of tulle to catch the wind.
- Pose with purpose. Utilize the beach’s natural elements. Have your subject sit on a rock formation, walk along the shore, or interact with props like a seashell or a surfboard.
- Embrace spontaneity. The beach is constantly changing. Don’t be afraid to go with the flow and capture candid moments that showcase the joy of the setting.
- Fall & Winter: It doesn’t have to be a summer portrait session either. Rug up and try your hand at some casual beach portraits.
Remember: Safety first! Be mindful of tides, currents, and weather conditions.
With some planning and these tips, your beach portrait shoot can be a recipe for creative success. So grab your camera, embrace the elements, and capture the magic of the beach!
