Canon announced today the RF 35 mm f/1.4 L VCM, a new addition to its line of RF mount lenses for R series mirrorless cameras.

Optics

The new RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM lens features 14 elements in 11 groups, two of which are UD aspherical lenses. The lens has 11 aperture blades for beautiful round bokeh effects. The optical stabilization (yaw/pitch directions) is good for 7-stops of shake correction when used on cameras other than the R3.

Focusing system

Canon’s RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM sports two focusing motors — a Nano USM ultrasonic motor and a VCM voice coil motor. The full-time manual focus supports both one-shot AF and servo AF with EOS R series camera bodies.

Control ring

The control ring on the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM serves two purposes. It focuses manually or when set up in the camera’s menu. An AF/MF focusing mode selector switch is built into the lens.

Aperture features

When shooting still photos, the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM has regular electronically selected apertures. For cinema cameras, the aperture increments in 1/32 f/stops.

And more…

The RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM does not have a distance limit switch. Most short focal length lenses don’t need one. The camera is also dust and water resistant. It weighs only 1.2 pounds/555g. It’s small too. 3 inches in diameter and only 3.9 inches long (76.5mm by 99.3mm.) An accessory filter holder fits over the rear lens element for adding ND and color gels to the lens.
