Photographer: Marg Foley “Owls are awesome”
This photo took my breath away when I first came across it in our Flickr group. We’ve been fortunate to have a few Great Grey Owl sightings in my home state of New Hampshire, but I’ve personally never been so lucky to spot one in the wild. To capture one in flight, on a snowy day is just magical. Thanks for sharing with our group!

I hope the owl wasn’t baited. There is a large controversy about the baiting of owls for this type of photography. See http://www.audubon.org/news/why-you-shouldnt-feed-or-bait-owls
Simply because someone captured a photo of an owl does not mean that that animal was baited. To suggest such of this photo, when there is no context to do so, is inappropriate. This owl is not striking anything, and is in a classic hunting pose. Neither you nor I were there to suggest otherwise. There is no doubt that there are a few members of the nature photography community who do bait owls, putting their photos above the welfare of the animals. I just saw this posting today, almost a year late…thank you for featuring my photo! This owl was photographed in a nature park that is also a protected bird area. Shortly after I took this, he captured a small vole. There were several owls that wintered in the park, they were magnificent and brought out many photographers even on the coldest of days. They did not return this winter, apparently they arrive here every 4-5 years when the food source is low in their natural habitat.
