Ready to taking your studio lighting to the next level? One of the tricks that will prove handy for your portrait photography is using feathered light. If this is your first time to learn about this technique, we found just the Adorama tutorial for you!

Gavin Hoey makes a quick but solid demonstration on how to create feathered light and what it can do for your portraits. This essential studio skill is useful for controlling light, even when you’re working in a home studio. For example, feathering the light will allow you to seamlessly incorporate a second light source pointed to the background. Or, you can go for a completely dark/black background if you so require.

Moving the light source horizontally is the most common way to create this light. But, Hoey also showed us that vertical feathering can give photographers more lighting options. This type of light is also typically believed to give a softer light, but he was also quick to dispel this myth. Lastly, he also cautioned that every light modifier gives a different feathering effect. So, make sure to practice with whatever light source you have!
