Currently feeling stuck and uninspired with your photography? Before you even think about getting a new gear, why not explore the myriad of photography tips and tricks that you can get for free?

One of these techniques is the Squint Method, which Alex Kilbee of The Photographic Eye said allowed him to find remarkable images that others miss. As its name suggests, this method simply involves squinting your eyes to evaluate the contrast and distracting elements in your scene.

In the video above, he talks about how this technique works and what makes it an effective way to look for “secret images.” Essentially, it breaks down the scene into its basic elements — shapes, form, lines and texture — which aid in composition, regardless of genre, location and shooting situation.

What’s great about this technique is you can try it anytime and anywhere, and integrate it into your current photography practice. You can also use it as a challenge to see your scenes differently to help refresh your compositions.
