All photographers have a go-to camera or lens (and even camera + lens combo), whatever the genre or level of expertise. But an all-around focal length for practically everything? That’s usually a highly subjective topic, but let’s hear what it is for travel photographer Sean Dalton, and why.
In the video above, Dalton tells us why he thinks 35mm in a prime lens is the best focal length for a variety of genres, from landscapes, portraits and automotive, to interiors, architecture, travel and street photography. Since he’s been using the lens in his work over the past five or six years, he thought about the six reasons why this focal length has been an all-time favorite.
So, do you agree with Dalton’s reasons? Or do you have a favorite focal length of your own? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

I just got my first 24-70mm f2 gonna test it out today.
totally agree! I love 35mm <3
I think 50mm is much better than 35mm.
I must admit I prefer a 50mm too
After 60 years of photography, numerous cameras and lenses, I settled for the GM 35mm for my Sony A7C. It’s fits the bill for just about everything except nature (birds) photography. At 24 mp, I get excellent results with this kit.
I don’t agree a fixed focal length of 35mm is best for all those subjects, it’s not wide enough for landscapes or interiors. A flexible zoom like my 17-70mm is much more useful and versatile.
