Ricoh recently released the “Negative Film” picture profile, a new film simulation for the Ricoh GR III and GR IIIx, alongside the 1.70 firmware update. If you’re a fan of the film look and want to try it out, check out this first look so you know what to expect.

In the video above by Luke Taylor, he shares some insights and sample photos with “Negative Film” emulation applied. To help photographers get an idea about how it looks for different subjects and shooting situations, he did a did a side-by-side comparison of the the RAW standard profile with the new film simulation.

Through his comparison, we can see that there’s some noticeable brightening and contrast shift in the “Negative Film” images. As such, he also notes that you may run the risk of clipping your highlights or losing a bit of contrast along with the color shift. But if the softer or muted look is what you’re after, maybe you’ll enjoy this new film simulation.

So, what do you think of the new “Negative Film” picture profile? Is it something you’ll likely use a lot on your Ricoh GR III or Ricoh GR IIIx photos? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below, or in our group discussions if you’re already part of the Photofocus Community!
