After 16 years in the market, Skylum has just announced a brand new editing program tailor-made for portrait photographers. Skylum brought us the first Ai Sky Replacement and even Ai in Luminar Neo and Luminar Ai. This new program, Aperty takes retouching to a new level again. I managed to get my hands on a beta test and recently had a play with it. Let’s take a closer look.

Quick and accessible

  • Aperty promises to be quick and accessible to all portrait photographers with natural-looking results.
  • The AI, automation and batch editing promises to make editing fast — really fast
  • On Device — not cloud-based. This offers privacy and allows you to work from anywhere, as well as having full control over your libraries
  • Stand-alone product or as a plugin for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, as a plugin with Luminar Neo or external editor with Capture One.

Benefits and features

  • Aperty recognises 4,000 key focal points whereas previous programs, like Luminar Neo, only recognise 30-40.
  • Will work on a group of people in an image or a single subject
  • Blemish removal and skin smoothing
  • Makeup touchups
  • Creative edits like bokeh and studio lighting

Pros

  • Quick and easy to install and use, very intuitive
  • Blemish removal and skin smoothing worked really well, I preferred the Retouch options over the Reshape options.
  • Folders and images load very quickly
  • Batch edits could be a real time-saver

Cons

  • It would be great if you could quickly and easily move between Luminar Neo and Aperty for additional features
  • The Erase/Clone is a little clunky
  • A little on the pricey side, after the early bird special price (so jump in quick)
  • It did seem to run a little slow while other applications were running (could be PC-related – older Windows system)

Price and Availability

From October 1 until the release date, Aperty is available at an early-bird price: a 1-year subscription plus 1 year free for $199/€179. After the launch on November 7, Aperty will be available at $29.90/€26.90 for a 1-month subscription or $299/€269 for a 1-year subscription.
