I haven’t been to a “paying” one in years. One I do plan on doing is the virtual “Night Summit” by National Parks at Night group in 2026. The other ones where you can travel and have a 7/1 instructor to student ones have very enticing places but what those events do I can do on my own for far less than between $2-3k, not counting my travel, transportation, & food costs. The best workshop I ever attended was in Los Angeles, over a decade ago. It was hosted by the APA and was basically a full-day event with like, four different photographers each teaching a specialized lighting subject. We learned product photography lighting, portrait lighting, fashion lighting and on-location lighting out on the street with a cool car. It was awesome, and super affordable for members. I haven’t been to a workshop that good ever again, although I also have a degree in photography now and don’t need to learn the basics anymore.
