Can you make a camera as big as an apartment? The short answer is yes, by transforming it into a camera obscura. For an idea as crazy and interesting as this, we can trust Paris-based experimental photographer and weird lens enthusiast Mathieu Stern to give it a go. If you’re curious about what that looks like, today’s featured video has some answers for you!

“I have been living in Paris my entire life,” he said in his intro. “But I realized that I never captured the Eiffel Tower in an original way.” So, he came up with the idea to turn a Parisian apartment into a giant camera. The plan was to create a reversed camera obscura inside the room and record a time-lapse video using a digital camera.

For those who are new to the concept, Stern also included a brief explanation of what a camera obscura is and how it works. Since it creates an upside-down image, his main challenge was to reverse the projection. Interestingly, there’s now a specialized lens/kit that lets you do precisely that.

Of course, he also needed to find the best spot to capture the famous landmark. Fortunately, he found the perfect location that had everything he needed to carry out this interesting photo experiment!
