When it comes to capturing travel scenes and memories, photographers typically reach for the most reliable photography gear. But once in a while, it’s not strange for some photographers to have a camera or equipment that they want to experiment with. For Paris-based Mathieu Stern, it will always involve something “weird.” Recently, it was a weird infrared camera. If you’re curious about trying something like that yourself, today’s video is right up your alley.
During a trip around UK, Stern took with him what he described as “a very special camera.” It was a Sony A7II converted by Kolari Vision into a full spectrum infrared camera. Using various clip-on filters, he was able to capture just a portion of the infrared spectrum and achieve various results. Each filter has its own color shift intensity and effect. So if you’re curious about how to get different looks through infrared photography, Stern’s sample shots should give you a clear picture.

After it was released, Leica discovered they’d put too thin a sensor glass on their M8 camera. It responded into the infrared range, and made some colors look strange compared to what your eye saw. It was like having a full-time infrared camera. You needed filters on all the lenses you used with it to get ‘normal’ color rendering. I’d have a hard time with the cost of dedicating a camera solely to infrared. It was easier to buy color infrared film with a film camera and just dedicate 36 exposures to it. You needed a yellow filter with color… Read more »
