We hear all the time that practice makes perfect. So we can just imagine how much time and work goes into something like 100,000 photos. Of course, when you take that many snaps, you’re bound to pick up some important lessons along the way. For today’s portrait photography inspiration, we have Australian filmmaker and photographer Mitch Lally sharing his key learnings from taking 100,000 portraits.

For interesting portraits, for example, different works better than creating something based on hard and fast rules. You can nail all the technicalities and end up with a good portrait, but it may not stand out or have a strong impact. This is where experimentation and out-of-the-box ideas come into the picture.

Likewise, an emotive portrait will always command attention compared to a straightforward snap. As Lally mentioned, photos that make the viewer feel something are what separates an average photographer from an outstanding one. Visual impact is one thing; emotional impact is something that often takes plenty of practice to achieve.
