For better or worse, the hype surrounding the Fujifilm X100V is showing no signs of slowing down. So, if you’ve been wanting to get your hands on this camera for street photography, looks like you’re going to be waiting for a bit more. But if you’d rather not, here’s a budget version that may even be a better option.
Photographers like Marc Taraz Steiner are touting the Fujifilm X-E4 as a great alternative to the coveted Fujifilm X100V. It has the same sensor as its more expensive sibling but in his video above, Steiner also noted its small form factor gives it an edge over the X100V. This feature, as everyone knows, is sought after by street photographers since it’s easy to carry around. It’s also inconspicuous enough for subjects to not notice, or for people to assume that it’s a professional camera.
Do you agree that the Fujifilm X-E4 is a better option than the Fujifilm X100V? If not, what camera would you recommend as an alternative? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below, or in our group discussion if you’re already part of the Photofocus Community!
I still want to buy a camera from a shop where I could test it hands-on, and not from a delivery system where I am helpless against human error and hidden defects.
The X-E4 would be a good alternative but it’s also as hard to find and goes for a premium here in the UK. The best alternative you can actually find is the X-T3. A used one with 18mm and 35mm lens will cost less, has better rear screen and is almost as stealthy in black. Yes it’s bigger but the ability to shoot at 28mm is a massive bonus.
Yes, X-E4 (or 3) is better than the 100 series in many ways. X-E with 27mm f2.8 is more compact, plus I find 23 too wide as a do-it-all lens, and find 27mm much better.
And if I want to take portraits, I can swap the lens for the 35mm f1.4. Or if I want wider, I can add the 23mm.
I had opened google chrome and to my surprise saw my thumbnail pop up in the news section… I was shocked to see an article had been written about my video! Thank you!
Aren’t they similarly priced?
Unfortunately the XE4 has also become difficult to find. Alternatives could include the other X100’s. My fav being the X100T. There’s also the Ricoh GRIII to consider. I watched a YouTube video recently on the FF X20 and makes another wonderful small form factor camera that’s even easier to carry in one’s pocket. However it is a little slower than the modern cameras, however it fits perfectly in a $500 or so budget. Also there’s the XE2 and XE3.
I have an X-E4 and I prefer it to the X100V of course for its comparable (if not smaller) size which makes it inconspicuous for street photography yet still announces itself as a camera. Most importantly I have a repertoire of lenses to choose from including a 35 f1.4 as my go to lens. The only issue I have is weather proofing. Size was the reason for my replacing my XT3 with the EV4. Not ready to give up my lenses.
X-E4 too good to use as a photographer to record memories of ur style to impress viewers.
I like the more minimal button layout of the XE4, but it has no grip at all, whereas the X100V has a slight bump. I prefer older XE bodies and X Pro bodies because they have much better grips. Depends how you use your camera but I would try in store before buying.
