In the mood for squeezing in a road trip before summer ends? You may already have some go-to cameras in mind. But if you’re also up for some challenge, you might want to give shooting large format a go. It’s not for the faint of heart and frail of backs given all the work and hauling around that you have to do. But it can also be a different and interesting experience!

For a bit of inspiration, allow us to share a four-day road trip that Jason Kummerfeldt of grainydays did with Caleb Knueven of Bad Flashes. In the long-ish video above, Jason recalled all the fun and struggles he had while shooting 8×10 large format with Kodak Portra 400, Ilford HP5 and expired Kodak Ektachrome E100S. For the lenses, he brought along a Nikkor 240mm and Nikkor 120mm.

As we can conclude after watching the full video above, some great shots did come out from all that back-breaking large format shooting. Many of their locations were also begging to be photographed in all the glorious details of large format. The Kodak Ektachrome E100S had some slightly wonky results, but that’s not surprising coming from expired slide film. But many of the Ilford HP5 shots turned out really good, despite what Jason said about them (in classic grainydays humor)!
