A vanity domain name is a custom web address that is created specifically for the purpose of promoting a company or individual’s brand or identity. For example, instead of using a generic domain like “www.companyname.com,” a vanity domain might be something like “www.brandname.com.”

Often some host providers will offer a generic domain for your website, which is free. However, they are often a little convoluted to remember, like my Portrait website. As I link from my proper website, it doesn’t matter to me.

Benefits of using a vanity domain name

  1. Improved branding. A vanity domain can help to strengthen your brand and make it easier for customers to remember your web address.
  2. Increased credibility. A vanity domain can make your business appear more professional and trustworthy.
  3. Better search engine rankings. A vanity domain may be more likely to rank well in search engine results, which can drive more traffic to your website.

Drawbacks of using a vanity domain

  1. Cost. Vanity domains can be more expensive to register and maintain than generic domain names.
  2. Limited availability. It may be difficult to find a vanity domain that is available and meets your specific needs.
  3. Complexity. If you already have an established website with a generic domain, it can be complex and time-consuming to switch to a vanity domain.

What about your business name itself?

This gets a little more complex. Depending on your business model a vanity name can make it easier for people to remember your name and find you. This can be a company’s legal name, or it can be a name that is used solely for branding and marketing purposes.

Alternatively, a business name could be something snappy, short and easier to remember than your full name. Short snappy business names are often easier to create logos, and sell the business at some point in the future. Not everyone WANTS their name associated with the business.

Drawbacks of using a vanity business name

  1. Complexity. If you already have an established business with a different name, it can be complex and time-consuming to switch to a vanity business name.
  2. Legal considerations. If you want to use a vanity business name that is different from your legal name, you may need to register it as a “doing business as” (DBA) name and follow the necessary legal steps to do so.

Ultimately, whether or not a vanity domain or vanity business name is a good fit for your business will depend on your specific needs and goals. It may be worth considering if you want to strengthen your brand and increase credibility, but it’s important to weigh the potential benefits against the potential costs and complexities.
