Apple’s new iPad is a great way for photographers to show off their images. The new display is simply stunning. It’s not one of those things that you need scientific equipment to know. You can tell – just by looking, that Apple has significantly improved the display. If you look at the original iPad side-by-side with the New iPad it’s no contest. The New iPad blows away the old.

That said, I always thought the resolution on the original iPad was fine. But if you want the best experience possible, use the new iPad (aka the third-generation iPad) and your images will shine.

According to Apple’s web site, if you want to perfectly size your images for the new iPad, use these specs: (Taken directly from Apple.com)

2048-by-1536-pixel resolution at 264 pixels per inch (ppi)

You’ll note that this is significantly higher than the original iPad spec (four times more in fact). I’ve set up an export preset in Aperture to match these numbers and called it “iPad3Export.” That way, when I am sending an image from Aperture to the iPad I know I’ll have the best possible product. Additionally, the new iPad has more saturation (according to Apple 44% more.) Be careful not to over-crank your images for the display. Also, while I can’t find agreement on this one issue – some photographers find the new iPad a little bit warmer than old one. The color temperature may be different.

One thing to note. If you send your images to the iPad through iPhoto, I believe it resizes or “optimizes” them for the iPad. In my experience that’s always bad. If you can set the specs manually, dump your images to a folder outside iPhoto and then have that folder sync with your iPad, you should get better results. As new updates of iPhoto are released, keep an eye on this feature to see if compatibility is improved.
