When MagMod first announced its new MagBox softbox system, I have to say I was excited. While I've long been a user of AlienBee strobes, they're starting to age, and in need of replacement soon. The MagBox had what seemed to be a system that made sense, especially given the fact I had already been using MagMod's speedlight modifiers for the past two years. In this case, I could get a couple speedlights, attach them magnetically to the MagBox, and I'd be good to go. And after seeing the MagBox in person at PhotoPlus Expo, I'm even more … [Read more...] about MagMod innovates how speedlights & beauty dishes combine
The other day I was in New York City for PhotoPlus Expo and Photofocus hosted its annual photowalk. It's a highlight of my photography year and I hope you can join me next time, or at the next conference (like WPPI). I had the pleasure of making several portraits during our walk, and you might benefit from simple principles for making street portraits while photowalking. 1. It's just a portrait First of all, there's nothing different about street portraits. It's still a picture of a person, and you should do your best to make it a good one. … [Read more...] about Portrait Tips: Street Portraits
Sigma first unveiled their new series of lenses series at Photokina in Cologne, Germany last September. This new collection includes five new lenses to their three Global Vision product lines: Art, Sports and Contemporary. As a sports photographer, I was really intrigued by the announcement of their highly anticipated 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom lens. I made sure to stop by their booth at PhotoPlus Expo to get more information about this new high-performance telephoto lens. 10 exclusive low-dispersion glass elements What in the world is a … [Read more...] about Could this lens possibly become the best 70-200mm f/2.8 on the market?
Last week's PhotoPlus Expo has officially come to a close. Between all the talk about full-frame mirrorless cameras, on-stage demos and seminars, there was a ton to see and do as a photographer. More than 200 exhibitors showed off their latest and greatest products. Attendees saw everything from new cameras and lenses, to post-processing software and camera accessories. Next year's PhotoPlus Expo is slated for Oct. 24-26, 2019. But who is it for, and should you plan on going? Who PPE is for Compared to WPPI, PhotoPlus Expo (PPE) reaches … [Read more...] about So long, New York!
This year at PhotoPlus Expo, all the rage was around mirrorless. Canon, Nikon and even Panasonic have joined the likes of Sony, introducing full-frame mirrorless cameras. But this begs the question — what's in store for Olympus, a long-time mirrorless manufacturer using a micro four-thirds format? The micro four-thirds format was released by Olympus and Panasonic in 2008. While there's been a handful of other micro four-thirds cameras made since its introduction, Olympus and Panasonic have been the heavyweights. With Panasonic's … [Read more...] about Exclusive: What’s in store for Olympus?
Only a few hours left! We hope you can join us tonight, Oct. 26, for a New York City photowalk! We’ll start in Times Square, help each other make great pictures and have a fun time in the Big Apple. We’ll begin in Times Square and venture upon some of the iconic places within walking distance. With PhotoPlus Expo in its second day, I've been able to explore the expo floor quite a bit. One of the companies that intrigued me took a simple idea — the case foam you find in cases from companies such as Pelican, DORO and SKB. When you buy a case with foam inside, you're expected to either cut or break away pieces in order to fit your gear securely. This can create several issues because it's impossible to make a perfect fit for round lenses and camera bodies. When I went to Ireland last summer, trying to fit my camera and lenses took … [Read more...] about Found at PhotoPlus: MyCaseBuilder custom foam solutions
