Zhiyun sent me this 60 Watt COB LED light to review. The G60 is billed as a pocket light. Most definitely lightweight at 300 grams but the square shape moves it out of the pocket realm for me. It’s about the size of a Rubik’s Cube. That said, there’s a lot to like about this light. It’s a partner to the Zhiyun Molus X100 I reviewed earlier.

Lots of power for a form factor this small, making it easy to travel with, although I’d lean toward working with this light in the studio. More about that later.

Zhiyun Molus G60 Pocket COB Light — Controls

I covered the COB LED type lighting when I reviewed the Zhiyun Molus X100.

There is a small push button switch to turn on the light. You may find it a bit of a surprise when the light does not turn on. No internal battery. The light comes with an electric power adapter that needs to be plugged in. Once it is powered up there are two knobs for control. One for power and one for color from 2700 to 6700 Kelvin. Because they are very finely adjustable it can take a long time to go from off to 100% output. Zhiyun takes care of that by allowing for a push down click of the knobs. A jump from zero power to 25% to 50% to 100%. Same with the color adjustment. 2700K to 5500 K to 6500K and back to 2700K.

Zhiyun Molus G60 Pocket COB Light — Going mobile

If you want to go mobile you’ll need to add portable power in the form of a PD power pack. The light will only produce the amount of light that your chosen power pack can produce. For example, I hooked up two different USB power packs I already own. The one that provides 15 watts allowed for 20% of the 60 watts of the light to shine. The 18 watt output model showed 24% of the 60 watts. That is a still fair amount of light.

If you want the full 60 watts of light that the unit can provide you’ll need a PD capable power pack producing over 65 watts I’d recommend 100 watt output. I found one with 20,000 mAh capacity on Amazon for under 50 bucks. You’ll also need to make sure you have a USB-C cord capable of moving that amount of power. I linked to a single 100 watt 10 foot cable which is about $13. Note that the power pack can be used for lots of other charging uses such as keeping your computer charged so it’s not just an investment in power for the light.

G60 Watt light powered by a power bank. This 18 watt power pack allows the G60 to output 24 percent of the 60 Watts. See the text for more info on getting full portable power above in the text. Without the Zhiyun mini softbox you can get this G60 light for $199.

Zhiyun Molus G60 Pocket COB Light — Light modifiers, etc.

The unit that came my way has a proprietary mounting system for the Zhiyun lighting universe. A small reflector with a rubberized globe softens the light nicely. The rubberized hood is inverted into the reflector for storage. I’d recommend making sure that it is moved out away for the COB light as there can be a good amount of heat generated especially when turned up to the full 60 watt output. A small Zhiyun soft box gives more direction to the light. It also comes with a grid for even more directional control.

Take care to extend the light modifier to convex as opposed to the storage concave shown above as COB lights can generate some heat.

Zhiyun Molus G60 Pocket COB Light — Additional modifiers

Zhiyun doesn’t leave you stuck with only their modifiers. This also came with a Bowens Mount adapter. This converts their mount to a Bowens mount. You can use Bowens soft boxes or modifiers you already own. And, of course, my favorite, shoot-through umbrellas can be employed as well.

This light being so small with so much power can be carried all day for on the go video or quick stills lighting. It also comes with a small stand that can double as a handle for easy control of the light.
