Brewing beauty: Capturing still life magic with coffee beans and daisies, and the Hobolite Micro!
Calling all coffee and flower enthusiasts (and photographers, of course!)! This blog post is for you! I recently brewed up a storm of inspiration with a still-life photoshoot featuring fresh coffee beans and delicate daisies, all beautifully illuminated by the mighty Hobolite Micro.
Why coffee beans and daisies?
This seemingly unlikely pairing offers a delightful contrast in textures and colors. The rich brown hues of the coffee beans are offset by the cheerful white and yellow of the daisies, creating a visually interesting composition. Plus, who can resist the aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans while setting up the shot?

The Hobolite Micro: Your pocket-sized lighting hero
The Hobolite Micro is a photographer’s dream for still-life setups. This tiny but powerful light source allows you to achieve precise lighting control without the bulk of traditional studio lights.
Here’s how we used the Hobolite Micro in our coffee and daisy shoot:
- Soft, diffused light: We used a diffuser attachment with the Hobolite Micro to create a soft, even wash of light over the entire scene. This helps to highlight the details of the coffee beans and daisies without creating harsh shadows.
- Directional lighting: By positioning the Hobolite Micro off to the side, we were able to add a touch of drama to the composition. The directional light creates depth and dimension, making the coffee beans and daisies appear more three-dimensional.
- Color control: The Hobolite Micro offers adjustable color temperature, allowing us to achieve a warm, inviting light that complements the natural tones of the coffee beans and daisies.

Ready to capture your own coffee and daisy still life?
Here are some additional tips to get you started:
- Background: Choose a clean and simple background that won’t compete with your subjects. A neutral-colored piece of fabric or a wooden surface work well. We used a subtle green vinyl print backdrop.
- Composition: Experiment with different arrangements of your coffee beans and daisies. Try creating a pyramid shape for visual balance, or scatter the beans and flowers for a more organic look.
- Props: Incorporate additional elements to add depth and interest to your scene. A vintage coffee grinder, a rustic wooden table, or a well-worn book can all add a touch of storytelling to your image.
The possibilities for coffee and daisy still-life photography are endless! With a little creativity and the power of the Hobolite Micro, you can capture stunning images that are both beautiful and evocative.
I captured these images with my Sony A7RV, a mix of Tamron 28-75mm and Thypoch Simera 28mm lens ISO100, f/2.8 on a tripod, and Hobolite Micro on 100% power and temperature 5600K.
