This is Wilbur our traveling wombat. It’s all a bit of silliness, but it makes life fun and keeps people engaged while we travel on our adventures. The tags of #whereswilburnow and #wilbur get some great comments and we have taken Wilbur on so many of our adventures. So, I thought I might introduce him — and the little photo series where he stars — here too.

How did we find Wilbur?

Many years ago we were on a Road trip to Wilsons Promontory (Victoria, Australia) and stopped at a cafe and spotted Wilbur for sale. There were a few of them and on his backpack was a great idea. Take photos of Wilbur while traveling around the area and win prizes. He was only $10 so we thought why not, he’s super cute.

How did we do?

We actually won a weekend at a bed and breakfast in Fish Creek for a weekend, which we did about 12 months later. We had a fabulous weekend and took Wilbur again too. Sadly we have not won anything since, but I am not sure the promotion is still running. It has been many years.

What about other Wilburs?

There have been lots of Wilburs, as I used to follow the hashtag. I remember a pilot who placed him in the cockpit of a commercial jet and took a snapshot of him every time he came in to land. I saw another who went skydiving, ballooning and fishing. Wilbur was a great sport. We sadly had forgotten him on our last couple of trips, but he has done a lot. He even went to Bali! This trip we decided it was time for Wilbur to hit the road again.

I usually prop Wilbur on the dashboard or bonnet of the car with something in the background with the title “Where’s Wilbur Now?” I had so many comments when we started our recent trip. So many people were happy to see Wilbur back on the road again. True, it’s all a bit of silliness, but Wilbur does make travel fun. So, if you’re thinking about adding a bit of fun and cuteness to your travel snaps, maybe consider getting your own little travel buddy for starting a mini photo series with!
