Want to try doing a fantasy photo shoot? One of the things you need to set up is the right portrait lighting to create or accentuate the right mood. If you’re planning to work in a studio, we have just the right tips and tricks video to inspire you!

In the video above from The Slanted Lens, Jay P. Morgan shares some behind the scenes and tips from his latest fantasy shoot. After breaking down his camera and lens combo of choice (Sony a7R V and Tamron 28-75mm G2), he proceeds to talking about lighting his fantasy scene.

For the background light, he used a Westcott Optical Spot, on which he attached a metal gobo and a blue color gel. This allowed him to produce shadows that created the illusion of a forest setting. Also, he attached this entire setup onto a Westcott FJ400 Strobe.

Next, he also placed two other FJ400 Strobes with grid as rim lights on either side of the model. Finally, he had the model hold a Westcott FJ80 with a globe light fixture to serve as a key light and a narrative device for the fantasy scene he created. Add in the prop branches for extra depth and smoke/fogger for some atmosphere and you have a beautiful fantasy shoot!
