Nicole recently wrote a nice post explaining the megapixel madness were experiencing right now, and why in some cases it makes sense. I want to add to her article by sharing my perspective. I understand the argument for more megapixels when you want to print big. Its a valid argument. I know a lot and I mean a lot of photographers. I don't know very many at all who print big. In fact the majority of the photographers I know don't print much at all. So its unlikely they would need more megapixels for that purpose. But for those who do want … [Read more...] about One Argument Against The Quest For More Megapixels
Back in 2009, when I made my living photographing stock imagery, the size of the images we could license made a difference in our potential for sales. Photos were sold based on how big the file was (in megapixels), so photographers with large-megapixel cameras had a more competitive edge over those of us who did not. At the time, I was using a Nikon D200, a 12-megapixel camera, and felt pressured to upgrade. When it was obvious that Nikon (at the time) was not going to come out with anything with more than 12-megapixels, I decided to make the … [Read more...] about Megapixels: Does Size Matter?

This is a complex subject. Megapixels are a measure of quantity, not quality. An 8 megapixel camera phone isn't the same as an 8 megapixel DSLR camera. In short, not all pixels are compared equally. Simple formula to determine megapixels Multiply the width (in pixels) by the height (in pixels) then divide the result by 1 million For the sake of simplicity, we are going to assume you have a DSLR camera. I currently shoot with a Nikon D700 12.1MP camera for sports and a Nikon D810 36.3MP camera for portraits. To determine how many megapixels your … [Read more...] about How Many Megapixels Do I Need for Printing?
Canon just made headlines again this week with the release of the worlds highest resolution 35mm DSLR, the Canon EOS 5DS and the 5DS R. Designed for commercial, studio, portrait, landscape, and architectural photography, this camera is also being positioned as an alternative to medium-format. At roughly $20,000 less than traditional medium-format cameras like PhaseOne and Hasselblad, the ultra-high resolution of these new models allows for larger printing and extensive cropping capability, while maintaining fantastic image quality. 5DS … [Read more...] about More Megapixels? You might have heard that Canon just announced two new cameras. The Canon EOS 5DS and the EOS 5DS R, which will feature a 50.6 MP sensor. Really? 50 MP? Do you really need a 50 megapixel camera? What is a Megapixel? Megapixel means that a camera can capture 1 million pixels per image. That means a 12 megapixel camera can capture 12 million pixels per image. Does that mean a 50 megapixel camera is amazing? Im sure the camera is amazing but why would you need 50 megapixels? Ask your self how and where you utilize your images? Are you and your … [Read more...] about Do You Really Need a 50 Megapixel Camera?
If youre in the market for a new camera, it often seems like the number one criteria is megapixels. Im not saying that this is right, but it's the one of the few criteria that camera makers think that their customers can understand. I often think theres a lot of hype with cameras, so Id like to take a second and break down what a megapixel really is and help you figure out how many you actually need for your workflow. A megapixel is simply a unit of storage that describes the amount of data captured by a camera. It can be written to internal … [Read more...] about How Much Do You Know About Megapixels?
I own an iPhone 4s and have owned every iPhone since the very first one. I like the iPhone. But I have recently tired of Apple's closed systems, PR policies which limit valuable and necessary information that consumers need to make informed decisions as well as other business practices. Accordingly, I have decided for the first time since the 1980s to venture outside the Apple eco-system. While I still own and use an iPhone, I wanted to take a crack at the newest Android phones. I ran a poll on Google+ and the Samsung S3 was most often … [Read more...] about Samsung Galaxy S3 Smartphone From A Photographer’s Perspective

Okay this is a rant but it's an important one in my mind. I just saw that one of the camera manufactures is releasing a 16 MP compact point-and-shoot camera. 16 MEGAPIXELS IS TOO MANY ON A COMPACT! Period. This is nuts. The marketing departments at the camera companies need to take an ethics class or a photo class or both. There is no good reason to release a 16 MP compact camera other than: 1) The manufacturers are so cynical and unethical as to think that selling people on the MORE idea is the only way to go when they know that MORE doesn't … [Read more...] about Stop the Megapixel Madness – STOP NOW!
