It seems like everyone is making small, affordable primes right now. Tamron recently released a line of small inexpensive E mount primes. Sony also joined in by releasing an affordable line of G series primes. Sigma also decided to throw its hat into the ring with their new I series primes. While 35mm f/2 DG DN lens is available for Sony’s E mount (see our review here), it’s the L mount that sorely needs small affordable primes. Sigma recently sent me the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary to review. Let’s talk about it.
Sigma’s small, well-built I series contemporary lenses certainly raised a few eyebrows when they were released, especially the odd 65mm f2 DG DN. This fast prime lens finds itself sitting between two of the most popular focal lengths (50mm and 85mm) and nobody knew quite what to make of it. We’ve been hard at work figuring it out.
The Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN Contemporary isn’t the most exciting lens in the Sigma I series lens lineup, but it’s tiny lens that packs a lot more performance than you might expect.
The Panasonic Lumix 85mm f1.8 was the first in a series of four affordable L mount prime lenses announced by Panasonic to hit the market. These bang-for-your-buck, lightweight, fast primes should appeal to the masses. Still, Is this affordable portrait lens good enough for working professionals who have a budget to consider?
