Rocky Mountain National Park–A Picture Perfect Autumn Destination
Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall is a nature photographer's dream come true: tall, rugged mountains, landscapes saturated with the colors of changing leaves, and wildlife so close at times you barely need a telephoto lens. I last visited the park the first week of October. Colors were still bold across the mountainsides, although they probably had peaked a week or two before, depending on the location. The days were warm, the mornings and evenings cool to cold. The air definitely felt like the seasons were in transition. Longs Peak, … [Read more...] about Rocky Mountain National Park–A Picture Perfect Autumn Destination
Photographer of the Day: Mary Hulett
Category: Nature Photographer: Mary Hulett Title: Guadalupe Serenity There is much to like about Guadalupe Serenity, starting the use of the water as a leading line, which pulls the viewer through the frame. Next, I love the color palette. In so many autumn shots, the focus is on vibrant, contrasting colors. Here, the muted palette adds to the overall sense of calm created by this scene. Finally, the leading lines and palette are both picked up in the reflections in the water. Put it all together and the result is a wonderful image … [Read more...] about Photographer of the Day: Mary Hulett
Photo of the Day: Path to the Unknown Destination
Category: Architecture/Landscape Photography by Nadeem Ahmad Originally shared on the Photofocus Flickr page. There's no denying the power of autumn's colors when you look at images like Nadeem's. The smattering of reds and oranges draws the eye and the trail pulls us in. The stark grey tree trunks enhance the image's charm. To learn how your work can be featured on the site, please https://photofocus.com/2015/10/02/photofocus-puts-the-spotlight-on-you/ … [Read more...] about Photo of the Day: Path to the Unknown Destination
Ten Fall Color Photo Tips
Editor's Note: This is an update of Scott's advice for shooting Fall colors. Be sure to post some of your favorite images or links on our Google+ page. ______________ I know that the leaves are changing around parts of the world. Because many of you have contacted me with questions about how to shoot the colorful leaves. Here are some quick tips. Wet leaves look best. Fall color looks better when it's wet. Wait for a rain or bring some spray bottles full of water (and gelatin) and you can make the leaves look great. Use a polarizer. Shoot … [Read more...] about Ten Fall Color Photo Tips
Contrast is King: Quick Tip for Autumn Colors
Nikon D800, 50mm f/1.4 D lens, f/11, 0.4-1.6s, ISO 100, finished in Photomatix Pro and Lightroom 5 I've taken Rich Harrington's advice and read The Visual Story, by Bruce R. Block, and the one point that always comes to mind is that contrast is a major key to a great image. Color contrast is one of the first topics, and he teaches that even the richest red is more red when viewed next to blue. I'm applying this to photographing fall colors, which are at full power in much of the USA right now. Green is a cool color and when green trees and … [Read more...] about Contrast is King: Quick Tip for Autumn Colors
Seven Basic Fall Color Photography Tips
It's that time of year. Depending on where you live you might be in the peak of the fall color season. Every year we get lots of email at Photofocus asking about fall color tips so here are a few to get you started. 1. Contact your local state parks and ask officials where the color is. You may think you know the best places near you but color is seasonal and changes depending on weather in the previous summer. Park officials will generally have a better idea than you where to look for and see the best color. 2. Bring a tripod. You will need … [Read more...] about Seven Basic Fall Color Photography Tips

Fall color looks better when it's wet. Wait for a rain or bring some spray bottles full of water (and gelatin) and you can make the leaves look great. 2. Shoot with a circular polarizer on your lens. The polarizer helps cut through the glare that reduces the contrast and color in the leaves. 3. Use slow shutter speeds to blur leaves moving through streams. 4. … [Read more...] about Seven Fall Color Photo Tips
Five Quick Fall Color Tips
We're in the peak of fall colors in many areas of the Unites States. For some of you this will come late. You can file this away for next year. Here are five quick tips for improving your fall color shots. 1. Use a polarizing filter. The glare that reflects off the leaves makes it harder to capture the real, deep, beautiful fall colors. The polarizing filter can help you cut out that glare. 2. Underexpose by a half stop. If you underexpose, the colors in your image will be more saturated.' 3. Keep the sun behind you and make your photos within … [Read more...] about Five Quick Fall Color Tips
