For anyone who’s ever wanted to make the most out of their Instax Square film photos, looks like the answer is now here. In case you missed it, meet NONS SL660, the first interchangeable lens SLR camera especially made for the Instax Square format. The best part? It takes vintage lenses!

In the video above, photographer and weird lens enthusiast Mathieu Stern shares his thoughts on the latest NONS interchangeable lens instant SLR camera. Compared to the NONS SL42, the Instax Mini version launched last year, the SL660 seems to be better built.

For his quick review, Stern used two M42 lenses: the Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8 and the Super Takumar 17mm f/4.

Based on his test shots, Stern observed that due to Instax film’s low dynamic range, it’s not good for high-contrast scenes. As such, it tends to produce underexposed photos when shooting at the recommended Sunny 16 setting.

The NONS SL660 is by no means a cheap camera at $599. It also doesn’t help that the learning curve comes with a high cost, as Instax Square Instant Film is pricey as well. But if you manage to nail the exposure with enough practice — and you’re okay with experimenting once in a while — the results can be pretty good.

Any insights on the NONS SL660? Is this a camera you can see yourself experimenting with? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below, or in our group discussion if you’re already part of the Photofocus Community!
