Given the rise of film prices every year, film photographers across the globe are constantly looking for the next best budget-friendly emulsion to stock up. Kodak Ultramax 400 used to be one of those, but today, even that has become harder to come by. So, it’s not surprising if there are now more film photographers wondering if it’s still worth looking for and shooting with in 2024.

In his video above, Steele Johnson explained his recent experience with Kodak Ultramax 400 in terms of cost and availability. He also shared the photos he ended up getting with it from a few big trips he did last year. He also mentioned the qualities that made this film his affordable go-to, and what he liked about it compared to other budget color negative films like Fuji Superia 400.

While a firm favorite, the prices of this film has gone way up compared to when Johnson started with film photography in 2016. Still, he finds it a worth buying and shooting with in 2024, and it’s still less expensive compared to other films. Shooting film isn’t as affordable as it once was. But if you don’t mind occasionally “investing” on the craft and the experience it brings, Kodak Ultramax 400 is still one of the films you can pick up.
