Epic North Pole trip!
Be the first to create mind-popping star trails images by placing your camera atop the historic North Pole during the solar eclipse. This pole was planted by Arctic explorer Sir James Clark Ross on June 1, 1831. Sign up now for the early bird price of only $1,995,999.06.
What
At 4:20 a.m. on April 20, 2023, a solar eclipse will occur directly over the geodesic latitude 90° North, right where the historic North Pole is located. Plunk your camera on top of the pole, do some long exposures, and you’ll capture star trails swirling around this eclipse. And you’ll be the first to do this. Well, along with the eleven other photographers going with you. Try to get to the pole before they do.
Who
The North Pole Dancers are intrepid night photography workshop, instructors. They have collectively amassed over 10,080 minutes of experience navigating the harsh Arctic climate. For this unique occasion, the lead guide will dress as Santa Claus. Other instructors and scientists will dress like elves.
How
From Anchorage, Alaska, you will go on the nuclear icebreaker 50 Years of Victory in the Arktika Suite. From there, if the guides can find areas that aren’t melting, you will travel to latitude 90° North on a large sleigh. Yes, of course, it’s red.
Accommodations
On our way there, we will spend one night at the amazing North Pole Igloos. These are the northernmost hotels in the world. These igloos are heated glass igloos that are movable and sustainable. And you’ll be in an elite group of people who have spent a night at the North Pole’s glacier. Also, this will be about the only time you’re reasonably warm on the trip, so enjoy!
Meals
Our intrepid instructors and guides will prepare delicious dinners of arctic char, seal, polar bear and caribou, depending on whether they are able to run them down. If not, they’ve packed savory Spam and Saltines.
What to bring
The North Pole Dancers staff ask that if you have elf clothes, you dress like those for this special occasion. The area around the North Pole typically has a high of 39°F (4°C) and a low of 21°F (-6°C). But don’t worry, dress in layers. You know, just like elves do.
Also, the area around the North Pole is sometimes rather damp, so you’ll want to bring galoshes and floaties.
Bring a camera with manual controls and an ultra wide-angle lens, extra batteries, and Velcro for adhering your camera to the historic North Pole. Take a Pentax K-1 if you can. They’re pretty much indestructible and will probably be the only electronic device that works.
Note: we ask that workshop participants do not stick their tongue on the pole. Thanks.
