With the Fujifilm X100VI all the rage yet out of reach lately, it’s not surprising that many street photographers resort to looking for the next best thing. There are some obvious choices for every budget. But UK-based professional photographer and videographer Tom Carlton noticed that there’s one camera that that nobody seems to talk about: The classic Pentax MX-1.
The 10-year-old, retro-styled enthusiast point-and-shoot camera, he said, comes with an impressive range of features that make it a great choice for street photography. For starters, it has a lightweight and compact form, great handling, and a 3-inch flip out screen, and a budget-friendly price. The image quality isn’t that bad at all for a decade-old model, and the issue Carlton encountered also added a retro-look to the photos. But most interesting is the brassing of the camera body over time, which is definitely aimed at vintage camera enthusiasts.
Carlton went on to the rest of the reasons why he thinks more street photographers should be at least considering this compact shooter. Do you agree with all the points he mentioned in the video above? Or do you have your own recommendation/s for a street photography camera that won’t break the bank? Love my GRIIIx
I’m a big Pentax fan . I have a K70 and a K01 I purchased in Singapore. I also just bought a 35 mm pentax lens . Very inexpensive. I will look for this camera when on in the uk and the next time I’m in asia.
“Camera that no one is talking about.” That 10 year old digital camera is selling for $250-600 usd…
$800.00 on Amazon in the US.
Why is this considered a budget camera it’s 10 years old and still in the $500.00 budget. Olympus pen ,E-PL, E-PM cameras start around $100.00 that is 11 years old.
The E-PL and the E-PM are simple and great for beginners coming from a smartphone.
You can definitely learn on a Pen but they are addictive and you may end up with G.A.S.
The pen has dual controls so using Manual is easier as you grow.
With the right lens they can be pocketable if you have a jacket.
Nothing wrong with Pentax, but I like Olympus Pen series
I love my E-P3
I have a 13yr old Nikon Coolpix P7100 which is perfect for me as an EDC camera
28 – 200 (35mm equiv) lens, lots of control, almost like DSLR and fits in my pocket.. I have 32Gb SD card so lots of storage. 3 inch screen and a live viewfinder, it does most of what I want
Canon s95 is better.
I’ll stick with my Minolta X700 thanks. You really have to think, instead of shooting from the hip, shooting people’s backs and sticking it on Instagram with the latest “street” hashtags.
Olympus EM10. Why look any further.
