So, you’ve picked a perfect, scenic location for your outdoor portrait shoot. You’ve already decided on the gear to use and the wardrobe and props for your model. However, the only available schedule for your shoot is noontime or early afternoon — not exactly the ideal time to work in because of the full sun! But, with today’s portrait photography tips, you’ll be able to still make the best out of this scenario!

In the Adorama video above, Gavin Hoey shares five simple tips for finding and achieving the perfect portrait lighting, even in full sun. Finding shade is always the first course of action to avoid the harsh shadows and discomfort for you and your model.

In case you can’t find any shade or the shaded area doesn’t work for your shots, you can create your own instead. A diffuser will come handy for this, so make sure you always have one with you when shooting on location! If you have a flash with softbox, all the better, since you can create your own shadow and balance the ambient light and flash.

Gavin’s other tips should help you out if the first two weren’t possible for you or you need extra help. So, don’t be afraid to shoot out in the sun, and give these tips a try!
