Being a Los Angeles portrait photographer, editorial-style portrait sessions are very popular.

With that being said, here are my five tips if you want to do more editorial-style photography in your next portrait session:

In my YouTube video, I cover the five tips if you want to do an editorial-style photography.

Here are the five tips:

  1. Understand the story
  2. Explore creative angles and perspectives
  3. Use artificial lighting
  4. Pay attention to little details
  5. Capture moments

The first tip stresses the importance of understanding the narrative behind the shoot, which influences choices like location, outfit, and lighting. For instance, a rebellious theme led to the selection of a grungy warehouse and a suit with an untucked shirt. Meanwhile, the second tip encourages exploring various angles and perspectives to alter the viewer’s perception, ranging from eye-level to lower angles, each suited for different kinds of shots. My third tip emphasizes the use of artificial lighting, advocating for simplicity and overcoming the fear associated with complex lighting setups.

Then, the fourth tip highlights the significance of paying attention to small details, like symbolic elements, background and props. These can greatly contribute to the story and impact of the images. Finally, my last tip suggests capturing dynamic moments, encouraging photographers to shoot subjects in mid-action for more engaging images. This involves building rapport, using music and considering the subject’s interaction with their environment.
