Here’s a quick pre-show post for those going to an event or conference this weekend or the coming week.

We recently covered the upcoming WPPI and mentioned the ongoing RootsTech 2024 conference. Maybe there’s something else you’re attending — and documenting over the weekend? It doesn’t have to be something related to our industry. It can be a concert, a state fair, a dance recital or even a horse show!

So, it’s time to go over your pre-event checklist. Get mentally ready to go and try a battle-tested decision-making model used today by combat units around the globe: OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act).

Try these simple steps, especially if you’re in a new city or venue or got off the underground at the wrong stop! If you follow this simple OODA process, you might even take your experience to a new level. Add it to your quick notes!

Say, you’re attending the WPPI. So, you’re standing in the door, maybe a C130 or the entrance to the event, the light goes green, and you are through the door. What’s the first thing you do? I might say open your eyes or remember to breathe, but that’s not part of the process.

First, OBSERVE your surroundings! You need to know where you are. Do a full 360 sweep. Look for restrooms, food sources, entrance and exit points, and EMT or Security presence.

Then, ORIENT yourself. Yes, of course, scan for your favorite camera manufacturer, lens or lighting booth. Don’t miss the B&H tables for show specials. Some of you will look for industry “players” mingling with the attendees, like Jay, Bert, Joe, Dixie, Elia, Scott, Tamara, and so on. These booths are great for networking, meeting businesses, and making social contacts.

Now it’s time to DECIDE your next steps. Do I need to pee? Am I hungry? Can I stow this suitcase? Where will I start my show experience? I always start with the highest engagement booths, the shooting bays, and model or professionally lit car or product bays. Be bold and immerse yourself in the whole attendee experience, like a concert. Get into the music, let yourself go and buy the limited edition tee shirt! Another keen choice to consider is, do I take one of the numerous educational sessions by many of the world’s top shooters?

Once you’re ready, go and take ACTION. Take note of what’s on your to-do list, to-meet list, and to-buy list, and be strategic about it so you make the most out of the event. Don’t miss out on the chance to change your life, business, and memories! Life’s too short and the time to act is now.
