Adobe has just released an update for Lightroom, version 2015.8/6.8. Amongst the bug fixes and changes is an additional develop mode, as well as macOS Sierra enhancements.

Improvements to macOS Sierra Compatibility

When macOS Sierra was released, there were a few minor bugs with Lightroom. The app would crash whenever you right-clicked in the Import dialog, grid numbers wouldn’t appear, and other minor bugs would interrupt workflows.

With today’s update, these issues have been fixed. The grid numbers are back, and the app seems to be flawless in the import process. Furthermore, the curve bug, which made for some crazy editing, seems to have been resolved as well.

There were also several non-Sierra specific bugs that were fixed. You can see the full changelog on Adobe’s website.

New Reference View

Adobe has also added a new view in the Develop module — Reference View. This allows you to compare two images side-by-side to make them more consistent with each other.

You can select one photo to be marked as a reference photo, which then remains visible as you edit photos next to it. It’s a great new view that will make for more consistent editing, especially when it comes down to things like white balance, exposure and color saturation.

To those who have used Apple’s now-defunct Aperture program, this will look familiar, as it was one of the standout features for the program.

To get started with this feature, you have to have the toolbar visible. Click on Develop, then on the Reference View icon (which looks like R|A). Then you can drag a photo to be the reference photo on the left side, and start editing the active photo on the right. You can also choose this to be top/bottom instead of left/right if you so choose.

Note that this new view is only available for Creative Cloud users.

New Lightroom Mobile Interfaces

In addition to the changes on desktop, Adobe has revamped its Lightroom Mobile editing interface. It’s easier to find the tools you use, by organizing them into categories like Crop, Presets, Light, Color, Effects and Optics.

Adobe has also changed its Info section, allowing the ability to add in titles, captions and copyright information from mobile devices.

There’s also a new capture interface for iOS, putting it in line with the Android version.

Additional Changes

In addition to the performance enhancements that come with every Lightroom update, Adobe has improved fit/fill zoom (specifically handy on high-res monitors), and they’ve also added the ability to filter or create a Smart Collection for images that have Snapshots. Finally, the option to export a Collection Set as a new catalog is also present.
