Nat Coalson’s book, Nature Photography Photo Workshop simply floored me. I’ve seen other people try to do this, but never so well. What Nat is offering (via Amazon anyway) is a virtual workshop in a book for less than $20.

If you have ever wanted to go on one of those fancy outdoor nature photography workshop but couldn’t afford to, this book is for you. By way of disclosure, Nat has written a couple of guest posts here at Photofocus, but beyond that I have no contact with him. But once he started writing for Photofocus I dug deeper into his background and it’s clear he’s very talented.

Nature Photography Photo Workshop is more than 300 pages packed full of great images and practical, step-by-step advice. You could almost view it as a mini college class in nature photography. Nat tells you everything you need to consider from ethics to gear, to composition, to planning to execution. Not only is the book full of great images, Nat has set up assignments and a community for people to post their images. You get the chance to interact much like you would at a real workshop.

This book is well written and easy to follow. It is thorough and offers quick tips that will get you immediate nature photography success. From capture to post, Nat covers pretty much everything you could ask for on this topic.

The book is biased toward people who don’t have tons of photographic experience, but even intermediate level shooters will get more than their money’s worth here. If you have an interest in the subject matter, i.e., nature photography, you’d be hard-pressed to find something with better illustrations or instruction than this book. Highly recommended.
