About a year ago, I found out that the FS700 even existed. Being obsessed with slow motion, the only options I ever had were dishing out $800+ per weekend for a RED camera, or shooting 60fps.

Neither one of these options were particularly ideal. That was until the , a group of six sisters signed to Universal Music Group.

Form Factor

The actual body of the camera is not much bigger than that of a DSLR. (about twice the size). While this is much bigger than a typical consumer camera, it is extremely portable, and easy to transport.

The Benefits of 240fps

When it comes to shooting something like music videos, you have such a short amount of time to actually capture the audiences attention, so you must pull out all the stops and deliver something awesome. Unlike a standard consumer camera, this camera can shoot up to 240fps at High Definition, delivering stunning slow motion.

Here’s a sample clip:

For the price, the FS700 is one of the most superior cameras you can get for your buck. The camera is extremely user friendly, and creates a beautiful image. Most importantly, it is one of the only cameras that can shoot above 120fps, and still give you a beautiful shot.

File Format Challenges

The one downside that I found is, the camera shoots in .MTS files, which can be difficult to convert. Tools like Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro X. At my job we work on Avid editing systems and ours needed the footage converted. An easy way to convert the files is to use a tool like Movie and export each clip individually. There are also utilities available to make the clips easier to use if you have an older editing system, or one that doesn’t recognize the .MTS format.

The Final Video Shot on the FS700:

The video above uses the Sony NEX-FS700U. You’ll see a good mix of many frame rates used to create standard and slow motion effects. This video was produced by the company I work for and I helped on the project.
