Real World with Lightroom Mobile

With Lightroom mobile, photographers can edit and organize photos in their Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 catalog using an iPad or iPhone. Its the only mobile photo editing solution that works natively with Lightroom 5 and can edit raw images from DSLR cameras using Smart Previews. When you edit your photos using Lightroom mobile on your iPad or iPhone, all your edits are automatically synced with your Lightroom 5 catalog. – Adobe

To explain how Lightroom Mobile fits into my workflow, I’ll use Adobe’s description of Lightroom Mobile and apply it to a recent shoot. We were on set shooting a food campaign for a local company in Melbourne Florida. We tethered our camera to the computer and fired up Lightroom. As I shot, images appeared on the computer for the art director and client to see. So far nothing unusual, until Lightroom Mobile entered the workflow!

This is major time saver! As I’m shooting, the art director and client were selecting images on their iPad without interrupting my rhythm. Once a set was complete, we quickly viewed ONLY the selected images. Minor edits were performed such as cropping and exposure if needed. Based on their input, we either reshot or continued with the next set. The ability to organize images by selecting their favorites made post processing a breeze. Seeing if the exposure was correct or how tight the crop was made gave me a better idea of what the art director and client were looking for. I made my adjustments based on their feedback in real time.

Ive been using Smart Previews as part of my portable workflow since they were introduced with Lightroom 5. With Smart Previews, I can take my catalog on the go without having to bring my massive Drobo unit filled with the original photos along for the ride. I can still work on my photos and even share them using my iPad. During the shoot, we were able to post a few edited images to Facebook and Twitter.

I like editing my final images on our studio system equip with a 22 inch Wacom Cintiq. Using Lightroom Mobile, selected images along with slight edits made on the iPad were automatically synced with my laptop. I applied my changes and they were synced back to the iPad. This two way process made it possible for the art director and client to discuss business and when the edits were made, they could see them in real time on the iPad.

Once the shoot was complete, we handed the images off to Jessica Larneda, a graphic artist. Based on our selects, she chose an image and created an ad for the client.
