GoPro just released major new firmware updates for their popular HERO 4 camera, bringing a few different video frame rates and a new video time lapse mode. Firmware updates allow manufacturers to unlock features in their cameras that were undeveloped at the release and can add value to their customers. It’s almost like getting a brand-new camera!
HERO 4 Black and Silver Edition Upgrades
Time Lapse Video Mode
In a world of instant gratification, GoPro added a new Time Lapse Video mode. The HERO 4 will record a time lapse and convert it into a video that you can quickly and easily share without the need for post processing. This is great if you want to showcase a sunrise, road trip or family gathering as a short, sharable video.
30 photos/6 seconds Burst Rate
Never miss a moment with the new 30 photos in 6 seconds burst mode. At 5 images per second, this mode is perfect for fast-action, like surfing or snowboarding.
Auto Image Rotation
Shooting upside-down? GoPro will automatically recognize its orientation and rotate the image when youre shooting upside-down. No need to rotate the image in your video editor.
HERO 4 Black Edition Only Upgrades
Super SlowMo
Super SlowMo is a great storytelling tool typically found in more expensive, cinema cameras like the Sony FS700. Doubling the previous frame rate, the GoPro Hero 4 can now capture up to 240 frames per second! When youre editing on a 24 frame timeline, thats 10 seconds of super slow motion.
2.7k60 Video Mode
Capturing video in a higher resolution than 1080p allows creative freedom in post production. Its helpful when needing to quickly recompose your shot or apply effects like warp stabilizer. GoPro did just that with 2.7k60, allowing for cinematic, high resolution footage that’s great if you need to slow it down.

GoPro also updated the iOS app, optimizing performance for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. You can update the app through your device’s App store.
How to Update
The easiest way to update your GoPro HERO 4 camera is through the mobile app, but you can also do it through the GoPro Studio desktop application.
On your mobile device:
- Enable WiFi on the GoPro
- Connect to your GoPro using your mobile device
- Launch the GoPro app
- Click on the update arrow on the home screen.
The update will download to your phone, then transfer to the GoPro. It’s normal for the app to connect and disconnect, and for the GoPro to turn on and off a few times while updating.
For more information or to download the update, visit GoPro’s website: http://gopro.com/update/HERO4
I have tried to update my Hero4 Silver through the GoPro studio. While updating, they said firmware update failed. So i formatted my SD card again and I have tried to download it manually as per GoPro website and the problem persists. Any solution ?
Try the manual update. Go back to an older version first if needed, then go forward
Hi jay . Me too. i can’t update my gopro..
What should i can do ?
My email : [email protected]
Will the arrow in the app only show when an update is available? I believe I have the current firmware? That would mean I wouldn’t need the latest firmware meaning no arrow, I am assuming.
I am really impressed with this camera.
Yes…. it only tells you when an update is there. You can also manually download from their website and install via SD card
Thank you much
Hi, does anyone of you had issues with pairing your GoPro to the mobile app after updating firmware to ver 3.0.0? After updating the firmware, the camera wont provide Pairing Code. And when i tried to update the camera again manually, i get Camera Update Failed.
Any help?
thanks,
Guy
Haven’t had this problem. Try installing update via SD card and not app.
just bought a hero 4 silver and it was working fine until the forced update. “Firmware update failed”. it just flashes now. I cant get to menu, I tried to manually update and it just continues to flash. reformatted many times and inserted an new card and still flashing like Christmas..
help..
try updating via sd card and the app. Also remove the battery and let it go totally dead for a day to clear memory out.
I manually tried the update, gopro app, studio etc… I did however manage to reset it to original settings by reformatting and turning on with sd card(that worked) but no update.
I have the same issue as Rick. My camera will not update and tells me that the update fails but it keeps recycling and tries to update but it fails. Any fixes please! Thank you. Just bought my camera!
I just purchased my go pro yesterday and tried to do the update through my mobile phone. but it keeps coming up with ‘firmware update failed’. It then doesn’t let me do anything, it just freezes and i literally have to wait 10 seconds with battery out for it to work again. I don’t want to download the new update, is there any way around this?
Donald the update through go pro studio and your computer with camera connected via USB
I’ve had the hero 4 for over a year now. not once have I had continued success with it. I’ve tried virtually all the recommended fixes new SD cars, battery in battery out. connected to the computer etc, etc. It was not cheap and as far as I’m concerned I would never purchase or recommend a go pro to anyone who wants a quality product. The idea of having to constantly tinker reset, reformat, reinsert, download again and again spending literally hours is ludicrous. Honesty ask yourself if its really been worth the investment.
