Adobe just posted some information regarding the compatibility of the not-yet-released Lightroom 6, and operating systems for Mac and Windows. To read the update, go here.
In summary, Lightroom 6 will require that your OS (Operating System) is up-to-date with a recent versions of Mac or Windows. Here’s what you will need in order to run Lightroom 6 (when it is released):
- Mac: OS X 10.8 or above
- Windows: A 64 bit version of Windows 7, 8 or 8.1
For users with older software (Mac OS X 10.7, or a 32 bit version of Windows) they mention the following:
… you will continue to be able to install and run Lightroom 5 and use Lightroom mobile. However, you will not be able to install Lightroom 6 until you upgrade to a supported operating system.
For Mac OS X 10.7 users, you can update for free (click here).
For Windows users, you can use this link to determine if your system is 32-bit or 64-bit.

A 32 bit OS lets you stuck with 3GB of usable memory – no more, regardless of how much your system has, and only after some tweaking, otherwise are even less. If you didn’t adopt a 64 bit OS yet, well, it’s really time. After all, 7 64 bit has been available since 2009, and almost all computers sold in the past ten years are 64 bit capable.
I understand Adobe needs to exploit actual computer capabilities and power without being tied and hold back by what are really obsolete systems. Just hope LR6 will make good use of them.
Gosh, isn’t most every Windows PS/LR user already running 7 or 8.x? Maybe I’m out of the loop on that, but I wouldn’t think it would be a real concern now, what with the unsupported XP being unsafe to use, thus a dead duck.
Not all versions of 7 or 8 are 64-bit. You need the pro version.
