Fresh off the heels of Nikon announcing its full-frame Z series camera lineup, Canon has announced its first full-frame mirrorless camera system — the EOS R.

What are your thoughts on the new Canon EOS R? Sound off in the comments below!

The new mirrorless system features a 54mm RF mount, allowing for a shorter back focus distance. This lets the lens sit closer to the sensor, allowing for fast, sharp and more compact lenses. The RF mount features a high-speed 12-pin communication system and is designed for full compatibility with existing EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses through the use of mount adapters.

The new EOS R camera features a 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor powered by Canon’s latest image processor, DIGIC 8. This allows for shooting at up to 8.0 frames per second. Video can be captured in 4K UHD video up to 30fps, and record in 10-bit 4:2:2 with an external recorder. It also comes with the ability to shoot Canon Log, providing 12 stops of dynamic range, minimal loss of detail in shadows and highlighted areas and an increased range of choices when color grading.

The EOS R features Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus, with 5,655 manually selectable AF points, supporting AF at up to f/11 with a 384 zone real-time metering system. With f/1.2 lenses, the camera has AF sensitivity in low light in as little as EV-6. When using the new RF 24-105mm f/4 lens, the camera can focus in as little as 0.05 seconds.

The camera also features a silent shutter when shooting in single-shot mode. An upcoming free firmware update will add that functionality to continuous shooting mode as well.

The EOS R comes with a Vari-angle Touchscreen LCD. It has an ISO range of 100-40,000, which is expandable up to 102,400. It comes with USB 3.1 in-camera charging support, built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The camera has a single UHS-II SD card slot, with support for CR3 (RAW/C-RAW) and Dual Pixel RAW. It is also dust and weather resistant.

The EOS R will also have a BG-E22 Battery Grip available.

Pre-orders will be available starting Sept. 12, and will ship in October. The EOS R will be available for $2299 for the body only, or with the RF 24-105mm f/4 lens for $3399.

RF Mount lenses and adapters

In addition to the EOS R camera and the 24-105mm f/4 lens mentioned above ($1099), Canon announced three other lenses for the camera.

Available for pre-orders starting Sept. 12 will be the Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 L USM ($2999), RF 50mm f/1.2 L USM ($2299) and RF 35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM ($499.99).

Also announced were three mount adapters — an EF to RF adapter without a control ringone with a control ring and an adapter with a drop-in filter.

New EL-100 Speedlite

Finally, Canon announced a new compact and lightweight Speedlite, the EL-100. Designed for photographers who are just beginning to use an external flash or are in need of a secondary unit, the new Speedlite delivers both soft and natural lighting reproduction. The EL-100 can rotate upwards and to the left and right enabling photographers to bounce the flash off of nearby ceilings, walls or surfaces.

The EL-100 includes a Maximum Guide Number of approximately 85 feet at ISO 100, with 24mm wide-angle coverage. It includes an optical wireless flash function (sender and receiver) and flash exposure control, including support for Stroboscopic Flash and continuous shooting camera-linked functions.

The EL-100 will retail for $199.99.
