It’s OS upgrade time for Mac users. Yosemite bows out as El Capitan takes the stage. Last year at this time the move to Yosemite from Mavericks caused consternation among Canon photographers who relied on the EOS Utility as I reported last November first here on Photofocus. It took Canon a month to officially release the fix.
Test… 2.0, 3.0
The notice came this morning in the form of a banner on my MacPro. Upgrade to El Capitan was its gist. Having learned from last year’s snafu, I updated only the MacPro in the post production suite. A quick trip to Canon’s website was not encouraging. While the Software section acknowledged that my MacPro was running El Capitan, there was no update for the utilities.
EOS Utility 2
This version works with the previous versions of Canon cameras like the 5D Mk2, 1Ds Mk2, 7D and the like. I attached a Canon 1Ds Mk 3 to the Mac and EOS Utility 2 dutifully launched then connected to the camera. The software proved to be fully functional. Good start, El Capitan!
EOS Utility 3
Canon upgraded the EOS Utility software to version 3 for its latest entries. Pro camera 1Dx, Prosumer offerings 5D MK3, 7D Mk2, and the new high megapixel 5Ds & 5Dsr require EOS Utility 3.0. Once again I attached a camera, this time the 5Dsr with a USB 3.0 cable and held my breath. There! The splash screen appeared and, on clicking Remote Shooting the control panel opened. Success!
Cheers to Canon & Apple
I have no idea if Canon changed anything to make EOS Utility work with Apple’s new El Capitan operating system. I suspect that no upgrade to the utilities was needed. It doesn’t matter. Both versions work at least on my MacPro. These results mean I’ll upgrade my two shooting computers tomorrow with great expectations. I am sorry; a retired college professor with pet peeves: “…to version 3 for it’s latest entries.” It’s = it is. You meant “its” without the ‘ . But, a helpful article
Thank you. :)
Hi Bruce,
Thank you for proofreading! I did mean the possessive its not the it is version with the apostrophe. I know better and made a mistake. Your sharp eye will notice that my faux pas has been fixed.
Best,
Kevin
I have never used the utility and was wondering a couple things. How would I get it now for a 5D Mk II and is it helpful for remote viewing, focusing, etc?
It’s on Canon’s website. Here’s the link: http://bit.ly/1hg76gd Choose “EOS Digital Solution Disk Software 29.1a for Mac OS X…” You’ll need your camera’s serial number. When you land on the Drivers and Software page it will automatically detect the version of OS X. If you are running El Capitan, choose Yosemite from the dropdown.
Best,
Kevin
Thanks for the clear instructions. Totally worked.
You’re welcome!
Hi Kevin,
Thanks for clear instructions. I have followed same instructions for EOS M but unfortunately still EOS utility is not working. I really would like to make EOS utility working as all my photos are in this applications and would like to avoid migration to iPhotos.
Your help in this regards would be highly appreciated
Regards,
Kedar
I’m using EOS Utility 3 with El Capitan for my 5DMkIII – I have a problem where my latest photos are downloaded and numbered first, i.e. in reverse order. Can’t find any settings to change this, nor any info on the web. Anyone else have this issue?
Have you found any resolution for this reverse order problem? I too am having the exact same issue and for the life of me cannot find anything out there that resolves it.
Thanks for the information. i have an S90 and the “Imagebrowser” no longer works (i have El Capitan). Do you have any idea of how i could download my pictures? The Canon site wasn’t very helpful.
Right now “Photos” launches and they are downloaded there, but i’d like them elsewhere..
I have El Capitan on my MacBook Pro Retina. Current version of EOS Utility 3 does not work. Furthermore, Canon USA’s website indicates no compatibility with any of their EOS related software and El Capitan.
How can EOS Utility 3 be set so it doesn’t open automatically on Mac (El Capitan) I use Adobe Lightroom for tethered shoots and don’t want EOS Utility to open…
Launch Photos for OSx and under preferences change default application
I can’t get my MX 410 canon scanner printer to work with El Capitan. Any suggests?
I may be coming to this discussion late but I can not get EOS Utility to fully function with El Capitan. While EOS Utility opens, the camera comes to life, flickers but then stops as EOS Utility will not allow me to click on any options other than the Monitor folder function and the camera goes dormant! I do not want to use Mac Photos to do this process as it is laborious. Any ideas? Oh, I have a canon 400D – please no, not a new camera to justify getting photos from the card to the computer?!!
I have precisely the same issue! There was a workaround, which involved launching iPhoto, then quitting it and then starting the utility, but I’m jiggered if I can figure it out again. All my pictures are organised by the original Canon Image Browser file structure, and I have thousands of pictures and really don’t want to start reorganising to suit a new import method.
Any help would be hugely appreciated!
