I received an interesting email yesterday. Flickr gave me a heads up that they would be offering a new upgraded “pro” service. The email reads: “Tomorrow, 7/23, Flickr will be announcing news specifically for pro photographers.”
I seem to remember Yahoo’s CEO (Yahoo owns Flickr) saying there was no need for “professional” photographers anymore. Well maybe Ms. Mayer has seen the light. For all of you who used to have a Flickr “Pro” account – they are back. Albeit in a more expensive version.
Flickr says the new Flickr Pro includes:
New and improved stats, including improved navigation for viewing data on your photos, providing better insight on your most popular and impactful photos.
Ad-free experience (both on your own photos and when viewing everyone elses photos)
Pro badge highlighted on your account
20% discount on Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan for yearly subscribers*
Free standard U.S. shipping on Flickr merchandise or 50% off international shipping ($25 minimum purchase)*
*Only for annual Flickr Pro plan
New Flickr members can purchase Flickr Pro today for $5.99/month or $49.99/year. For Flickr members who have existing Pro accounts, you will automatically be upgraded to the new Pro account and keep your existing pricing and unlimited space. Existing Flickr Ad-Free account holders will be automatically upgraded to the new Flickr Pro as well with no change in price or renewal date.
If you already have a Flickr account you can upgrade at https://www.flickr.com/account/upgrade/. If you don’t have a Flickr account you’ll have to sign up for one in order to access PRO.
I am passing this on as information only. I am not offering an opinion as to the value or sufficiency of the service. I will do some investigation and if warranted, share more after I see what it’s like to use the “Pro” service. Essentially it seems that all you’re really paying for is the removal of the ads. I am not sure I use Flickr enough to care. What say you?
