The Challenge of Dynamic Range

My next house I did end up photographing was a small townhouse. I think those are extra challenging to photograph as you are working to be creative in tiny places to get the entire room without too much distortion. A tripod is a must even when working in such a tiny space. I went to work and bracketed each room.

The realtor sent me a text saying his clients were impressed and LOVED the pictures. I breathed a sigh of relief. After that praise I looked back through some photos and decided to play some more with Photomatix. Im personally not one who does a lot of HDR but as you can see, when shooting certain images, using bracketing and the techniques of HDR can allow the viewer to see the location as if they were actually there in person. I feel this is essential especially in real-estate photography.

A Shooting Approach

Heres a step by step of an image I took of the Salt Lake City LDS Temple:

1. Opening Photomatix and click to load images:

8. Once you click Apply, you can fine tune with Contrast, Color and Sharpening:

Some final images with varying degrees of dramatic editing.

The Bottom Line

Heres another great tool to get specific looks you need or want to create. Its simple and fun. I love going back to older photoshoots that I bracketed out of habit and now I can see what I can create.
