Sebastio Salgado is a Brazilian-born photographer best known for his social documentary photography of workers in less developed nations. He began his career as an economist who worked with the World Bank. He abandoned his career and became a full-time photographer in 1973.

Salgado spends his time traveling to countries to capture stories. He is known for his activism and was named as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and an honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States. He works on long-term self-assigned projects which he published as books. These include The Other Americas, Sahel, Workers, Migrations and Genesis.
